A good-looking event is decided long before anyone orders a stem. At Ali Rose Events Co. in Northumberland County, Ontario, design comes in four pieces: a concept board, a design deck, a floor plan and a guest flow. This is how they fit together, and why the order matters.

Who shapes the look
Design is Taylor's area. He is our Creative Director and Co-Planner, he shapes the look and feel of each event and the studio's visual identity, and he works closely with me while I lead the planning and coordination. You can meet us both on the About page.
Start with the room, not the palette
I would rather know the room than the colour. Ceiling height, the floor, the walls, where the light comes from late in the afternoon. The main gallery at the Art Gallery of Northumberland in Cobourg has hardwood floors and gallery-quality lighting (Art Gallery of Northumberland, Weddings, checked September 14, 2026). A room like that is already half designed, and the job is to add very little. A plain community hall asks for more, and that is a different kind of fun.
The concept board: one direction
The first design piece is a concept board: a visual mood board that sets one cohesive direction for the event. The point of the board is to commit. If the venue is oak and limestone, pull the palette from the building: oatmeal linen, aged brass, and one colour the room does not already have. Everything after this gets checked against the board.

The design deck: the version vendors read
The custom event design deck turns the board into instructions. "Warm, a little moody" becomes the linen colour, the number of bud vases on each table, the candle heights, the ribbon on the menus. It is written for the florist and the rental company, who both need the same answer to the same question, and it beats a folder of screenshots every time.

Floor plan and guest flow
A floor plan decides more of the atmosphere than people expect. Where the bar sits is where the crowd stands. The layout design places tables, bar, dance floor and the quiet corner, and the guest experience and flow plan maps the route a guest takes from arrival to departure.
Some rooms come with a head start. The rental of the Concert Hall at Victoria Hall in Cobourg includes the Ryerson/Guilet Room, which the Town says is often used for the seating chart and photo displays (Town of Cobourg, Weddings in Cobourg, checked September 14, 2026). That is a ready-made first stop for guests, and the design can treat it as one.
The rules come before the candles
Venue rules shape a design as much as taste does, so they get read first.

None of that is a problem if it is known on day one. Flameless candles grouped at three heights in brass holders still read as candlelight from across the room. A 15-minute window means flowers that arrive arranged and leave in one trip, which is a design decision, not a compromise.
